Broken Crayons Still Color

I am not sure about you, but my house quickly became filled with broken crayons! They were everywhere. I didn’t want to throw them out because we all know that broken crayons still color, but all the tiny pieces and broken bits were getting quite annoying. So I decided, why not melt them down and make new crayons! It would 1. Eliminate most of the broken crayons laying around and 2. It would allow me to have a fun arts and craft project with my little.

We headed to Michaels and got some supplies. We went to the baking aisle and got some silicone candy molds. We picked up some jungle animals and to our luck, the molds were on clearance! We grabbed the molds for $1.00 and headed home to start our craft project. The materials and directions are listed below.

Materials:

-Fun Shaped candy molds

-cup of water

-oven

-wax paper

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees

Step 2. Soak crayons in a bucket of warm water. This helps to remove the remaining paper easier.

Step 2. Remove the paper from the crayons

Step 3. Take the broken crayons and put them into the molds. Sometimes you may have to break some of the crayons smaller to make them fit. I got my animal molds for 1.00 from Michaels on a Clearance sale.

Step 4. After placing the crayons in the mold, put the mold on a cookie sheet. I lined my cookie sheet with parchment paper before placing the mold on top. Then I put the mold in the oven.

Step 5. Bake crayons for about 25 minutes. Make sure all the crayons are melted before removing the mold from the oven. The crayons and the mold will be HOT so be VERY CAREFUL!

Step 6. Let completely cool

Step 7. Flip out of the mold

Step 8. Start coloring and have fun.

This project turned out to be a lot more fun than I originally thought it would be. My little one also LOVES the crayons and coloring with them daily. She liked mixing the colors and we had a great time making and playing with them. I hope you too enjoy this fun little project that helps get rid of broken crayons.
